My calendar of events for the next year

I´m going to make a brief summary of the next year´s contests that I have planned to attend. I don´t know the exact dates of the events on the second semester, but I suposse that will be similar than previous years. And probably, other contests will be added to the list as the year progresses! Let´s start with the first in the calendar!

IV Concurso de modelismo Ciudad de Leganés (Madrid). Probably, the referral contest in Spain at present, which unfortunately now is not saying toomuch. I think that in the last years this contest has overtaken another historical contests like AMT Torrent in Valencia or the Soldat de Plom in Girona. It´s the first spanish show in the calendar, and it helps too. The organization is very good and the number of participants is high, has good facilities and a complete shopping area. About the figures...a medium-high painting level, but there are a lot of figures (in fact, almost all of them) seen in previous contests. Models, tanks, naval models, planes and cars are the most important part of an event that grows every year, but from my point of view with the same problems and defects than the most of the open contests.

Chicago Crystal Brush Awards 2014. I confirm my attendance for this year again. The CoolMiniOrNot contest does not seem consolidated as would be due to the big economic awards, but the experience is wonderful. The organization is very professional, the voting system is very interesting and unique because they have professional painters judging the pieces but also, the people can vote from their homes. This method is not used in any other competition in the world. The average painting level of the contest is medium, but it is a pleasure to see new works not seen before by some of the best painters over the world, not many due to the very high cost of the travel. Also, something I commented before; I enjoyed how the local painters lived the contest and the awards ceremony, without competitiveness, annoyances, criticism, gossip...

Stresa 2014 World Expo. It will be my first World Expo and I hope it won´t have the same problems and mistakes about the organization that I´ve read in reviews about the last one. I imagine that a World Expo in Italy will get together the best painters in the whole world. Of course, Italy is cheaper than Switzerland, where the previous World Expo was organized, so this will help too. The average painting level will be the highest of the year and even being an open contest, the fight for the gold medals will be difficult!

Open Quimera (Madrid). Definitely one of the store competitions with the highest painting level in Spain. But that's not what makes it great. We had a full day of laughter, ending with one of the best and funniest awards ceremonies you can to attend. The next year I will go as a part of the jury. 10 points for the organization. Impossible to miss.

Monte San Savino Show 2014.
This year I could not attend due to accommodation problems, so I had promised to attend next year, but the World Expo also takes place in Italy, not very distant dates on the calendar, and I think this will impact on international attendance to San Savino, also repeating the most of the figures viewed on the World expo. That, and my finances, will make that I doubt about my attendance until the last moment. Of course this year the level has been impressive, with many unseen works and a big number of incredible figures, but maybe next year will not the best to go, but I´ll try it.

Golden Demon. Will be Golden Demons next year? when? where? Only Games Workshop knows, and it will be revealed in the coming months, I suposse. Everything are rumors, but I imagine that the Spanish Games Day will be canceled again, and Germany and Italy will probably dissapear too. I would attend to the Uk Games Day, but I don´t know dates, so I can´t confirm my assistance. It´s a fact that the best fantasy artists still gather in the events of the british brand. And most importantly, with unseen works, regardless of the usual rare and unfair decisions and an increasingly commercial approach. On the other hand I love the system of 1 gold, one silver and one bronze per category, as opposed to the hundreds of medals awarded in the most of the open contests.

After a few weeks of hard work at least I´ve finished the second project of my Indiegogo campaign. Although everything about this piece will be explained in detail in the tutorial I'm preparing for the contributors of the Indiegogo campaign, I want to explain now some features about how I prepared the piece.

The past saturday was celebrated the annual painting contest in Quimera Miniatures. I didn´t have time to finish the ork for the contest. It needed more work, more contrast, more colour work, highlights, more outlines, but anyway, I wanted to compete with this figure. This was a mistake and a precious lesson for the future. Never compete with an unfinished figure. In the last three days, I´ve applied these corrections.

Orks + armours + weathering effects = the perfect plan for me. I had in mind this idea for months, a big scale Warhammer 40000 ork, but obviously, it´s impossible to buy one. If you want to paint one, you need sculpting skills or use a previous sculpt and make a conversion. I chose this last option.

I used as a base for the conversion the superb ork sculpted by my italian friend Carmine "thor" Giugliano, based on the Paul Bonner´s artwork. In the moment that I saw for the first time, I imagined a Warhammer 40000 ork with a big armor like Ghazghkull Thraka, so I drew some sketches and I started to work in the conversion. I used plasticard and some bits and as you can see, a very little amount of putty. I need to start to learn some sculpting techniques because the work with the plasticard is too slowly, tedious and difficult.

The ork is very very big. For your reference, the war staff is 18 cm. (7 in.) tall. The size of the figure have complicated the painting, and I didn´t feel comfortable with the painting in any moment. I like the result, but I´m convinced that It could be painted better. Definitely, the size beat me.

Like I said before, I´m preparing the second tutorial of the Indiegogo campaign, where you will be able to learn every point of the process.

Monte San Savino Show 2013

Hi all! This last weekend was celebrated the Monte San Savino Show 2013. It was impossible for me going to the contest, but I had to give some miniatures for the Mumi project, so Diego Esteban did me the favour of carrying them and delivering to my italian friends. But also, he had the great idea to submit two figures into the contest. Thanks again Diego! And I´m very happy because the Walking dead diorama won a gold medal in scenes category.

I promise that next year I will go to San Savino!. I think it´s one of the best contests around the world and I´m sad because I wanted to go this year! Some painters are publishing their pictures and are totally amazing.

Fabrizio Russo and Joaquín Palacios won the best of show with this awesome figure. you can see the list of awards.

I´ve compiled some links to different picture albums. I hope you enjoy them!

And stay tuned because the next week I´ll post my second Crystal Brush project, the big space ork!

At this point, you´ll probably be tired of my dwarfs! hehe. Don´t worry, this is the next to last! least for now...I would like to paint a black and white version in the future. This dwarf, and the other two, were painted during my workshops.

In this occasion, I decided to place the dwarf in a dungeon, but I didn´t want a low light approach, normal in this situation, so I decided to use a strong light from a 70-75º angle, with a high contrast if we take a look around the figure. We use to apply a cenital light but most of the times we forget that figures are a 360º volume, a 3D volume. No more changes compare with my other dwarfs...high contrast as I said, non metallic metals, same lights and volume interpretation, only the color is different.

I hope you like it!

Random encounter! - V.2

Hi all! The second version of the H&V´s dwarf is here! This was the first of the four dwarfs, and I started to paint it in my first workshop ever. As I said, I think that this is one of the best figures for workshops because you can learn about every key point like how to paint faces, various types of fabrics, non metallic metals or true metals, leather, etc. Also, it´s the perfect scale to jump from small scales to big scales. Most of the people use to start to paint gaming figures and they have fear to the big scales. This kind of figures like dwarfs or hobbits are perfect because they are in the middle between 30 Mm. and 54 Mm.

The figure was painting with low intensity cold tones and a very limited palette and high contrast. This version is my favorite. I´m very happy with the light effect and the overall effect. I hope you like it!

Putty&Paint - Review

In this occasion I´m going to write a review about a recently launched online miniature gallery, Putty&Paint. I had long been thinking that miniature painters and sculptors need a new gallery, a gallery which join the best of the best, with a fair judging system, without commercial interests and without fanboys more focused in the background of your last Space Marine that in your painting skills. This review has some extracts of the Putty&Paint´s FAQ.
On Putty&Paint it’s all about you and your projects. A place for artists to show their latest works and a great source to get inspiration. No forum, no figure shop, no news. There are plenty of other great sites for that. Putty&Paint is for talented figure painters, sculpters and scale modelers. There is no focus of style, genre or scale. However there is a focus of quality – Putty&Paint is for the best you got. The projects you are proud of and want to share with the world.

At this point it´s normal to compare with CoolMiniOrNot. I think that one of the biggest mistakes of CMON is the unfair voting system. You can vote anonymously and some people use this factor to vote dishonestly. Yes, maybe the problem is about people and not about the voting system. It´s sad. Your artist´s score is an average within your 5 best scores, but many painters usually submit the same miniature in different entries, so if you get a good score it will be multiplied by two or three, and thus is altering the voting system. To give you an idea, in the top 50 there are only 28 painters with five different projects in their top five scores. In Putty&Paint you can´t vote anonymously. There are some conditions if you want to vote:

- You must be a registered member.
- You must have uploaded at least 2 projects yourself.
- You can only vote once!

A perfect decision for my taste.

Also, and this is one of the best things, some artists who were not registered in CMON and another missing artists are uploading their figures in Putty&Paint. As a recent website, I miss some awesome artists as Sang Eon Lee, José Palomares, Sebastian Archer, Ben Komets, Joaquín Palacios, etc., but I´m sure they will be part of Putty&Paint in the future.

Your artist info and gallery

In Putty&Paint you have medals. Yes, you have a score too, but your vote is a medal, not a number. And what do the medals stand for? It’s just like the rating on a competition. Imagine you are a judge, be fair and judge by the work itself not by your personal taste. If you think a project is good enough then award it with a medal. Just an average project if you think a project is just average and not that good, then do not award it with a medal.

- Bronze Good Job.
- Silver Awesome Work
- Gold Top Notch Work – Impressive in every way.

Voting interface

As you can read in Putty&Paint website, before you vote keep a few things in mind:

- Do not compare projects. Vote for the project itself.
- Do not just judge the painting level of a figure.
- Consider mood, story, effort, conversion, too.
- Pay attention what the focus of the work is. Sculpting, painting or basing?
- And of course be fair. This is no war, this is about fun. No need to envy or vote the “sake of justice”.

Each vote will count a certain amount of points. Bronze average, silver more and gold a lot of points. All votes’ points will be calculated to determine a final score from 0 to 100pts. If you score enough points you will receive a medal.

- From 35pts – Bronze
- From 65pts – Silver
- From 90pts – Gold

The rating for a project will be displayed, when the project has been voted a least 10 times.

Also, Putty&Paint has a blog where you can read interesting interviews and some reviews, and of course is present in the social networks like Facebook or Twitter.

I´m very happy with this project and I hope that Putty&Paint will be the reference miniature gallery in a near future. Congratulations for your work Phil!

Indiegogo campaign - painted miniatures

Some contributors of my Indiegogo campaign chose the perks E and F, that included miniatures painted by me. Now, I´ve finished these figures and I´m sending the packages. I had to paint Freya, a beautiful 54 Mm. miniature from nocturna models, two space marines and one miniature from the Infinity range. I chose Achilles because I loved the Volomir´s version (you can see it here).

I have to say that I´m impressed with Alfonso Gozalo´s work in Freya. A superb anatomy, ultra fine details and a good dynamic pose. A pleasure to paint. Thanks at this point to Santiago Sánchez, who help me in the first steps of the painting process. I saved a lot of precious time.

As I said I like to paint Space Marines with unusual colors. I had to paint one Imperial Fist because the contributor wanted a miniature of this chapter, but I had freedom with the other one, so I decided to paint it in orange. I like the final result!

And Achilles, one of the smallest miniatures that I´ve painted ever! This is my first Infinity figure, but now I´m painting one of the big robots, Scarface. Stay tuned!

And thanks again to the contributors!

Random encounter! - V.1

This is the first of the four (yes, four) H&V´s dwarfs that I started in my workshops and I´m finishing in my free time. I love this figure from the moment I saw for the first time. I think he can be the new Yarry...superb sculpt from Jonatan Monerris, perfect to practise (all kind of materials) and the ideal scale to jump from 30 Mm. to big scale figures. I painted every dwarf with a different approach, one in warm tones, another one in a nocturnal atmosphere, another in a cold environment, etc....also changing the color scheme in every figure. This first version is the most similar to Diego Esteban´s awesome box art.

All the dwarfs are painted with high contrast. I wanted to teach my point of view about this theme to my pupils. Oh, and I´ve changed the sword of the kit for another that I made with plasticard, a straight sword.

I hope you like it! and stay tuned for the next dwarfs! only three more and Disney will be able to make a new film!

You can see the another dwarfs in the work in progress section.

Indiegogo rewards status - II

Hi all!

Another update! As you can see I´ve finished all the painted figures. I will contact with the backers who chose this perk in the next days to send the miniatures.

I´m working in the second tutorial. The figure will be revealed in Monte San Savino Show. I don´t know if I will be able to go because I don´t find a place to stay at this point, but in any case I´ll show the figure that weekend and I´ll start to send the second pdf tutorial a few days after.

Hi all! Another miniature started during one of my workshops and finished now. This time a little bit different than the Space Marine Terminator. Raúl and Miguel learned how to paint skin, clothes, leather and non metallic metal among other things. It was a great and funny workshop!. Thanks to both of you!

Space Marine Terminator

During my workshops, I paint some figures as examples but I don´t usually have time to finish them. I used this Space Marine in one of my last workshops to teach how to paint an armour with the airbrush, how to paint chips and apply weathering effects, and how to paint faces, among other things. I´m boring of seeing always the same Space Marine colors -blue, yellow and red above all-. I love to paint them in another not as usual colors like light green, orange, turquoise, etc. Try out another colors, it´s funny!

The figure is a conversion of a Space Hulk terminator. I´ve changed the head and removed every Blood Angels symbol. I liked the position, so dramatic, but the head was horrible.

I have a lot of figures in process of my workshops, and I´m trying to finish them in my free time to show you!

Indiegogo rewards status and some previews

Hi all!

A few days after I sent the pdf version of the Step by Step about "The Walking Dead" piece, I come back with a new update! As you can see, the second pdf is in progress yet. fact the mini is still in progress, but is almost finished! Do you want to see a preview? Here it is! He is a big big guy!!

Also, I´ve almost finished all the private tutoring so now, I will have more time to work in the figures and in the tutorials. These have been my first private workshops and I must say it is still a wonderful experience. I´m thinking of following the workshops if the spanish people are interested. Soon I will post a review of my workshops. Stay tuned!

And I have to paint 3 figures of the Indiegogo Campaign and two more for two german friends. There are a preview of the two space marines, almost finished, one Imperial Fist and another one of an undetermined chapter (these are my favorite space marines). The space marine librarian of the campaign has been replaced by Freya, a beautiful mini from Nocturna Models. It´s also in progress at this moment.

The video tutorial is the most difficult reward for me. When I want to record a little step by step like for example "how to paint non metallic metals", I need the entire day to finish it, and sometimes I don´t like the result and I have to record it again. It´s a hard work. So sorry for the delay again.
